Are you descended from the Funge families of Waterperry or Forest Hill?
Who am I
My name is John Howes; I am married with two children and live in Oxfordshire, as have my ancestors for the past 500 years.
Through my mother's paternal line I am connected to the following families in and around the South Oxfordshire villages of Horspath, Wheatley, Littleworth, Waterperry, and Cuddsedon:-
Munt, Maloney, Funge, Cooper, Shorter, Slaymaker, Sheldon.
Many of these families are so inter-related, over the years that it is a wonder that there are any spare genes left. In days past people would have married within their locality, or maybe the next village. Looking at my tree I have found recurrences of families marrying into the Munt line, time and time again.
Events such as the First World War would have been catastrophic for small village communities where most families were related by marriage. Names on the memorials do not do testament to the emotions of a small village. I have one ancestor who lost both his son and son-in-law, both of whom left behind young families. Each sacrifice affected the most parts of many small tight-knit communities.
In the years since the industrial revolution, families have left their traditional rural communities and headed towards the towns, many, disillusioned with insanitary conditions, saw opportunities by going into service. Many young people were in service miles away from home, probably only returning for a home visit on the occasional Sunday. These people in service would have found new friends and contacts wherever they were working, married and set up home. Thus the families appear in new areas on the relevant census returns. If you have long-lost ancestors in the villages mentioned above and think you are related to the above mentioned names, email me, or indeed if I have inadvertently made errors to mutual ancestors I will be pleased to hear from you.
